I come from a liberal family and charity has never been a question. I first started in 7th grade helping finding homes for stray dogs in Taiwan. We did fostering and even adopted two strays into the family. My mom now volunteers at a Filipino orphanage and I volunteer at the humane society. My mom and dad both volunteered after the big tsunamis flooded much of Manila. When I couldn't volunteer while in college, I still found a way to give some money to organizations I believe in (ie, the Sierra club). As a Leftist, it only makes sense to reflect my rhetoric with action. With all the blaming of the poor as "economically unproductive" by conservatives, I'm just glad they don't actualize those values.

I sympathize with this guy (whether he's real or symbolic). But I can't help but scoff when he blames the "economically unproductive". Far more money goes to the military industrial complex than social programs. If he wants to blame anyone, he should blame corporate welfare and all those multinational corporations which dodge taxes. The amount of money the gov't loses or spends due to corporate tax dodging and welfare far far *far* eclipses social welfare spending. It's breath taking how easily we're screwed the first time right out in the open and then convinced it's the fault of the poor.

yea, i agree that feminism does go a bit too far. i guess there are still imbalances in gender today, like the fact that in some jobs women are paid slightly less than men despite the fact that its against the law, but at the end of the day, if women WANT to be wives and mothers it should be left up to them. Its not fair that these radical feminists have to be so extreem about everything because all they're doing is pushing people the other way, so people forget the great things that feminists of the past did. And when it comes to things like pornography, which is kinda demeening to women, the women did choose to go in for that, and besides, its kinda funny but annoying how men seem to be turned on by everything we do.

I wish I had written this:-) My sentiments exactly! The thing that gets me is that those rubbing their good deeds in your face the most often, have the most dsyfunctional families - families that cost society in so many ways. While the supposed good-deeders are out saving the world, their families fall apart and spread the destruction among much of the world.

The way to be responsible to your fellow man is to live your life responsibly and first, take care of your own. Your responsibility spreads throughout the community, through each member of your family, and those you have befriended who spread their own responsibility around. The same with what we do for our churches and our schools.

Great rant.

There is no defense for discrimination. I have a hard time believing how hard some people try to rationalize their prejudice. Even if marriage is not a “right” but, in legal terms, a privilege and a contractual obligation....that just highlights how one group of people is being told this is a privilege or contract they CAN have or enter into and another group is being told for WHATEVER reason they cannot have the same privileges or contracts. That is discrimination or prejudice...no fancy words can change that simple truth. Eating isn't a right...just a privilege. So would it be right then to tell one group of people they cannot have access to food or contract for food? Hmmm.

I have a feeling that the gay community cares little about the word marriage. What they care about are those nine specific statutory distinctions you alluded to. To say this debate comes down to a single word is naive and to act as though that word should somehow be sacred and unique to one group of people is nonsensical. I am a married heterosexual and I see NO reason to keep marriage limited to only couples like me. It frankly baffles me when other people do feel that they should have a choice in the matter.

Are heterosexuals and homosexuals different. No, not in my mind. I am not black. I never have been and never will be a black person so does that make a black woman different from me? Different enough to warrant separate laws and different access to societal privileges? Heck NO! I could have a gay twin that shares my exact DNA and yet somehow they are different from me based soley on the person they choose to love and marry? Ridiculous!!

Gay people want the same rights and privileges heterosexuals have. They don't want to destroy the marriage union, they want to be included in it. I find it incredibly sad frankly that some people have to have a word that means heterosexuals ONLY. Sad that they can't see bigotry for what it is.

I sincerely hope that those of us who are conservatives with a growing voice in the new media (and especially Twitter) will be a force in shaping policy and ultimately what kind of America we have. Check out www.topconservativesontwitter.org for those who are having a say.

My two older sons, 41 and 37, both went to college. However, the best, and most valuable, education they received was from their mother. And, I hope I helped some. They learned yes sir, yes ma'am, please and thank you. They learned common courtesy and respect for others. As a result, they are capable of communicating and interacting with others from all age groups. Good article.

Brilliantly written, and I completely agree. I didn't vote for McCain in the primaries either, and don't know anyone who did. Sarah Palin needs a little work in my opinion with her speaking and knowlege of the issues, but she can accomplish this in short order. I think the GOP does have some viable candidiates who see the opportunity and are now beginning to step up to the plate.
